  Hammond Electric Organ: The Piano Alternative

Invented by Laurens Hammond in 1934, these organs were originally sold to churches and a low cost alternative to piep organs. By the 1960s and 70s the electric organ grew in popularity and was now being used in all types of music ranging from jazz and blues to rock and even gospel.
